Developer Spotlight: May

Maximillian Munguia, Full-Stack Developer • Los Angeles, California

The developers that show up at our HackerX events are more than just faces in the crowd. This month, we shine the spotlight on Maximillian Munguia, a music connoisseur and multi-faceted Full-Stack Developer who has been to not one but two HackerX events (in different cities, no less!) recently.

Before his programming career, he was a professional record producer and audio engineer who also hosted a nightly radio show in the UK.

HackerX: What made you decide to attend a HackerX event?

Munguia: I attended HackerX to check out the hiring landscape. I was on a job hunt and keen on networking with my fellow peers. HackerX seemed to encompass all of that.

HackerX: What were you expecting from an event like ours and were your expectations met?

Munguia: I was expecting just a quick introduction to companies looking to hire. I also intended to survey hiring companies to learn the primary in-demand coding languages. And I did, indeed, learn a lot about the technologies that companies are looking for in today’s market. #react

HackerX: Tell us a little more about your HackerX experience(s).

Munguia: To be honest, I felt slightly nervous amongst strangers at first. But I also sensed that other attendees felt the same way. I learned that although many of us are very different, most of us in that room are in the same boat in terms of objectives. We were all there to learn more about hiring companies. I came out feeling that people generally appreciate a positive attitude and are mostly open to friendly networking.

HackerX: Did attending a HackerX event help you in any other way?

Munguia: Yeah, it gave me direct access to hiring companies that I was interested in applying to and helped me understand what they are looking for in a new hire, including popular desired coding languages. It was also a great platform for networking with my peers.

On both occasions, I found that the attendees ranged from junior developers breaking into the tech industry to seasoned veterans surveying the market to keep their options open. For this reason, the room is full of professionals who are worth chatting with and networking. After the event I also managed to line up more interviews for my job search.

HackerX: Our concept turns the hiring and networking process on its head, and is a huge shift from the traditional method. Can you explain your understanding of HackerX in a tweet (140 characters or less)?

Munguia: Meet multiple companies in one night, and rub elbows with your peers. HackerX is your chance to speed-date your way to a good company fit.”

HackerX: Would you recommend HackerX to others, and what tips and advice would you give future attendees?

Munguia: Yes! Ultimately, each HackerX event is an opportunity for face-time with companies hiring in today’s market; face-time that would otherwise require additional steps, including initial formal applications.

The “speed-dating” portion of the event is fast-paced and allows for brief 5-minute introductions to each company. To shine here you must impress with your personality or a quick draw of your accomplishments. It’s true that it is difficult to secure a new job in 5-minutes. So your best bet is to make a case to the company on why they should be interested in a follow-up discussion. This is where your communication skills will come in handy.

Also, do not overlook socializing with fellow attendees. Although the featured companies are the ones for a direct hire, your peers may have a contact for who you might be actually looking for. Of course, do your best to stand out, and definitely bring your resumé and calling cards.

Munguia is versed in .Net, C#, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and T-SQL. Ask him about developing complex yet efficient UI/UX interfaces for various projects at Pangea. He is available and open for future opportunities and chats. You may also check him out on LinkedIn and Github.
