We bring you stories from the other side of the table as Ryan Constant, Talent Scout at Backbase, shares what it is like to take part in HackerX and how it has impacted their hiring practices.

Tell us a little about what your company does.

Backbase is a digital banking software company. Our mission is to help financial institutions create, manage, and optimize secure omni-channel customer interactions. Or in simpler terms, we’re a growing company in an innovative field, doing things no one else has done before.

Why did you decide to participate in our HackerX event(s) and how has it helped your company in its hiring practices?

We initially pursued HackerX as a recruiting strategy to raise the brand awareness for Backbase. However, after making our first hire at the first event, we decided to continue participating in the events.

Out of the 5 events we have been a part of, we have had numerous final stage interviews with HackerX candidates as well as multiple hires. The hires have been strong matches for our organization and we even uncovered some unknown rockstars in the process.

That said, the cost of acquisition with HackerX is definitely very attractive.

How many times have you participated in HackerX?

So far, we’ve participated 5 times over the past couple of years. We first attended the Atlanta event in July 2015 as a participant, and decided to bring HackerX into our offices by hosting the next few events that happened in Atlanta (January 2016, May 2017, and September 2017).

Why did you choose to repeatedly be part of HackerX, and why should other employers consider being a part of HackerX?

Easy, because I make hires from it and they are all quality hires. The cost of acquisition is low and at these events, you get an early stage candidate buy-in, starting a personal relationship instead of a transactional one.

Do you have any tips and advice for other companies who might be thinking of taking part in HackerX and how they can leverage and maximize this opportunity to its fullest potential?

Hosting is the way to go for the most exposure to the candidates, as they would already be in your offices and that can help them better imagine what it is like to work there (ie. the environment and culture).

Also, send both a Developer as well as an internal recruiter to the events so that you will be able to speak more to technical questions and explanations of what the company does and how that candidate would fit into their technical landscape.
